IMAM SHAFI: A PEEP TO HISTORY
ABDULLAH MUHAMMAD ibnu IDREES AL
SHAFI(R.A) was a famous philosopher in Islamic history and world history. He
was born on Hijri 150, AD 767, final friday of Rajab month at Gazza in
Falasthene. His fourth grand father’s name was Shafi, so that Shafi began to be
famous. His father was Idrees, his mother was Fathima Beevi, in family of
Hasad, his father Idrees was a scholar and worshiper. Not only AbduManaf is
fourth grand father of prophet Muhammad Swallalahu alaihi va sallam, but also
he is the tenth grand father of Imam Shafi. A prominent Imam who was a
descandent from the Hashimi family of Quraysh trible, which prophet Swallalahu
alaihi va sallam came from.
He is known as the
revivalist of the second century as he was the one who put the fundamentals of
jurisprudence; science of Usul al Fiqh. At the age of 10 , mother of Shafi
Idrees sent him to Makkah, near his tribal ancestry after entrusting initially
in the care of a relative, she followed him there to keep an eye on his
studies. As he couldnot afford enough writing material, Shafi used to go to the
governer’s office in search of paper that had already been used on the back
side of the paper, he would do his lessons. He memorized the Quran at his very
young age.
In order to improve his knowledge of Arabic, he went deep into
the desert to join the Bedunin tribe of Hathail, who were renowned for the best
standard of Arabic literature. He studied poetry and learnt their prose
reporting and stories. He accompairnied the tribe Nomadic travels, until he
mastered all that was there to learn. He also learnt archery and became very
skilful, he could strike at the target of 10 times out of 10.
On his return to Makkah, Al Shafi continued studying. At the
age of 20 he had completed all that his scholars have taught, but his thirst for
knowledge was not quenched. So, he traveled to Madeena to learn from Imam
Malikh.
Al Shafi wished to have a foretaste of what he would be
learning. He borrowed “AL MUWATTA” to read which even fueled him more eager to
study under Imam Malikh.
Al Shafi stayed very closely to Malikh for nine years, he
never left him during those nine years except to visit his mother or to stay
for a short while with some Bedouin tribes. The last three years at Malikh
study circle were doubly fruitful because the eminent Iraqi scholar Muhammad bin al Hassan; Al Shafi
learnt the fiqh in Bagdhad as well as memorized the Hadith that were known in
Iraq, but not in Madeena or Makkah. He also entered into debate with many
scholars, speaking as a student of Imam Malikh, but the world only debate with
lesser. Scholars then Muhammad bin al Hassan Shahibani whom he have great
respect.
The great scholar Qasim ibnu Salam says that, I did not see a
man who is a perfect as Imam Shafi. There was nobody in the period of Imam Shafi
who are prevailing him in Arabic scientific literature. Arabic literary man
Asma’ee says that “if there is any doubt with me in language, I will solve it
by Imam Shafi.
Imam Ahmad bin Hambal, Ibrahim Musni, Imam Buwaithi, Rabeeh,
Yoonus ibnu Abdu Aa-ala, Muhammad bin Abdullah, are the main students of Imam
Shafi. He was great scholar as well as a good orator and the researcher of mind
testing, but his character was as like as a student who studies the education
from his with me is very low, this shows the patience.
He expired in the Rajab month of Hijri 204, at Cairo in
Egypt, his age was just 54.
The first janaza namaz of Imam Shafi was lead by Hazrath
Musni. His janaza namaz was performed in the different places of Arabia. His
Qabr is in the Qurafa of Egypt. The khalifas of Fathimi built a main entrance(tower)
near the Qabr of Imam Shafi.
